Although you don’t want to have to worry about capturing every moment on vacation, I think it’s crucial to have a great camera with me in addition to my phone.
My passion for photography began ten years ago and I soon took over my father-in-law’s SLR camera to document our travels. After exploring techniques, I have always remained loyal to the Nikon camera. The buttons became intuitive, and shooting blindly became a habit.
In the beginning I carried my large SLR camera everywhere. With the purchase of new lenses I even needed an extra bag, which resulted in a certain aversion to my camera. In search of a more manageable format, I discovered the beloved Nikon Zfc, a light camera with a retro design. Now I carry it effortlessly over my shoulder, often without realizing I have it with me. I also no longer need an extra bag and I take this lightweight system camera with me in my backpack.
Why the Nikon Zfc?
To be honest, I initially had some trouble shooting with this camera. Even though it is a Nikon, it still took some time to get used to something new. But I didn’t give up and kept experimenting until I got the right feeling. Now my Nikon Zfc has become indispensable for all my travel adventures!
Travel photography of course differs significantly from, for example, wedding photography or nature photography. In fact, you want to be able to capture everything with one camera. That’s why I opted for a versatile lens, so that I have to switch between lenses as little as possible.
My favorite camera lenses for my travels
The ability to easily change lenses is a big plus. My collection includes different types of lenses. The Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 16-50mm F/3.5-6.3 VR lens is an excellent zoom lens with which you can photograph not only vast landscapes, but also portraits. The Nikkor Z 28mm f/2.8 is a lens with a fixed focal length and therefore has no zoom function. This makes you very creative because you have to move yourself. I think this is an excellent lens for street, nature and portrait photography, with the exception of interior photography. Then the Tamron 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD Nikon Z lens, with this lens you can get close to subjects at a great distance, making it a perfect lens for a safari and also with a nice price tag.
For interior photos of hotels, I prefer to choose the Nikkor Z 28mm f/2.8 lens. Sometimes I have to maneuver myself into the most unusual positions to get the perfect shot, but the result is amazing. I always use natural light and prefer it at the beginning or end of the day because of the soft light.
For photographing wildlife, especially in South Africa, I prefer a zoom lens with a longer range. Even though it is a light lens, it still requires some muscle strength to keep it up all the time. In the beginning I really had to get used to this lens, but with practice I eventually achieved the desired result with the Tamron 70-300 mm.
Not so long ago I discovered the Nikon 16-50 mm and with this versatile lens I have only photographed Japan. After several days of shooting with this lens, I was surprised by the results, and it has been my go-to lens on my Nikon camera ever since. See more photos I took with this camera here.
