Since our move to Japan, the Netflix algorithm has also undergone some adjustments for us. Unfortunately, I had to end my follow-up of Carrie Bradshaw’s new life in “SATC” prematurely, as HBO is not yet available here. Nevertheless, I will not be discouraged. I started looking for fascinating Japanese series on Netflix, preferably with Dutch or English subtitles. If you know of an interesting, fun or exciting series or film that I absolutely must see, please let me know!
Although I’m not sure if the series below are also available in the Netherlands, I would like to let you know what my top picks are for Japanese series on Netflix.
1. The Makanai – Cooking for the Maiko House
This series, written by the well-known director Hirokazu Kore-Eda, offers a sweet look at the lives of two friends who are training to become Geisha in Kyoto. With 9 episodes you can immerse yourself in Japanese culture.
2. First Love
A romantic series based on well-known songs by Japanese superstar Utada Hikaru. A female taxi driver from Sapporo is reunited with her first love from her teenage years after two decades. A beautiful romantic story that you can watch in one go.
3. The Days
This exciting series about the Fukushima nuclear disaster is confrontational and demands attention. It tells the story of the earthquake, tsunami and the consequences of the mistakes made. An impressive viewing experience.
4. Fishbowl Wives
A somewhat slick series about six women with marital problems in a luxury apartment complex. Despite this, it’s easy viewing based on a popular manga series.
5. Call me Chihiro
A former sex worker starts working at a bento shop in a small fishing village somewhere on the coast of Japan. Despite her past, she talks openly with customers and discusses problems. A beautiful film that tells a good story about loneliness and connection.
