My journey to the north of Japan
In December 2024, I decided to travel to Sapporo alone on a Peach Aviation flight. For those considering the same, be warned, as this budget airline is strict on baggage limits. My carry-on luggage turned out to be too heavy, and I had to pay extra—an unnecessary expense that can easily be avoided with better planning.
Arriving in Hokkaido the journey to my hotel was easy. Like everywhere in Japan, public transport is well organised. Within an hour I found myself in front of the Quintessa Hotel, a budget-friendly option with small, clean rooms, an onsen, and a convenient location close to the main attractions.
The charm of Sapporo
If you like big, vibrant Asian cities, chances are Sapporo will surprise you. The city has a spacious layout and offers everything you would expect from a modern Japanese metropolis: hip restaurants, hidden bars and a wide range of entertainment options. Yet Sapporo has a unique, relaxed atmosphere that differs from the always busy Tokyo.
3.5 days in Sapporo: Too long or just right?
Although Sapporo is charming, I thought 3.5 days was a bit too long. The city itself offers some interesting sights, such as the famous beer brewery and Odori Park, but activities within the city are limited. To make the most of my days, I took trips outside Sapporo to explore more of Hokkaido’s beautiful winter landscape.
What to do in and around Sapporo
Here are some highlights worth visiting:
- Mount Moiwa Ropeway – Enjoy stunning views of the city, especially at night.
- Sapporo TV Tower – An iconic tower with panoramic views over Odori Park.
- Sapporo Beer Museum – Learn about the history of Japanese beer production and taste local beers.
- Historical Village of Hokkaido – An open-air museum where you can experience the traditional lifestyle of Hokkaido.
- Otaru – A small port town with charming canals and delicious seafood.
The best time to visit Sapporo
I’m sure Hokkaido is even more beautiful and vibrant in spring and summer, when nature is in full bloom. Therefore, consider combining your visit to Sapporo with a tour of other parts of the island, such as scenic Furano or the lakes of Shikotsu-Toya National Park.
Is Sapporo worth it?
Yes, especially if you like winter landscapes, local festivals and a relaxed city experience with a touch of northern charm. But plan your stay wisely: a few days are enough to explore the city, after which you can discover the best of Hokkaido for a complete adventure.
