Since living in Japan with my loved one, I started traveling solo. From short daily trips and weekend trips to multi-day holidays. This time I am going to Thailand alone, and I would like to share my experiences and thoughts as a solo traveler with you. Welcome to my Diary of a Solo Traveler!
A new phase of life
During my flight to Thailand I have a lot of time to think. I look back on the past period, which was a world trip in itself. We left everything behind to live in Japan for a few years, without ever visiting the country. This new phase of life brings challenges and I am getting to know myself in a whole new way.
On a solo trip to Thailand
One of the biggest new adventures is solo travel. Unfortunately, due to circumstances, Thomas cannot always come along. I could have chosen to stay home, but decided to go out alone.
Although I haven’t made many long trips alone, I now have to arrange everything myself without my faithful traveling companion. Last week we did a final check together to see if I had prepared everything properly. I said laughing that there will probably be “Sanne moments”, such as forgetting my suitcase on the train or taking the wrong metro.

Good preparation is half the job
As the plane drives to the runway, I suddenly realize that I have not yet installed my e-SIM, which I need tonight to order a taxi via Grab (the local Uber). I already had a feeling that I had forgotten something. Fortunately, we still have to wait a while for a spot on the runway and I quickly unlock airplane mode to activate my e-SIM in the hope that everything will work when I arrive in Thailand. I know that if I had had Thomas next to me this wouldn’t have happened to us. I think there is little chance that it will happen to me again, but I wouldn’t rule anything out. One thing is certain, I can add another “Sanne moment” to my list!
