In 2023, Mount Fuji was reopened to tourists in Japan for the first time since the challenging Covid period. The number of climbers increased significantly, but unfortunately more people than ever set out unprepared. This led to new measures from the Japanese government for the coming climbing season.
Insufficient preparation, like neglecting to book a mountain hut for a night climb on Mount Fuji, adds pressure on rescuers. In addition, some hikers ignored Mount Fuji’s climbing rules, resulting in irresponsible behaviour such as building fires, leaving trash and urinating in inappropriate places.
Protection Mount Fuji & safety climbers
To protect Mount Fuji and ensure the safety of climbers, the Japanese government has decided to adjust some climbing restrictions. From Yoshida’s fifth station, gates will be installed, allowing access only between 2:00 AM and 4:00 PM. This offers climbers the opportunity to walk in peace and quiet without being bothered by others. In addition, the number of climbers admitted daily will be limited to 4,000. Previously, hikers could choose whether or not to pay a 1,000 yen ($6.25) fee before beginning their climb. However, from 2024, all climbers will be required to pay a fee of 2,000 yen (€12.50) to enter the mountain path.
